Q&A: Frequently Asked Questions

Are these images really free for use?
Yes, the reference images are free to use for creating artwork – including for commercial purposes. You may sell, print, or publish any artwork you make using these photos. However, the photos themselves may not be resold, redistributed, or uploaded to other platforms. As a member, you don’t have to purchase images — the only thing you pay is a subscription fee for this website, starting at $3 per week, and you can download as many images as you want and use them freely.
Can I sell artwork I create using your reference photos?
Yes, you can sell any artwork you create using our reference photos. You fully own the rights to your original artwork.
How do I give Reference Photos for Artists credit?
If you want to give credit, simply link to our website or mention “Reference Photos for Artists” referencephotosforartists.com as your source.
How do I cancel my subscription?
To cancel your subscription, go to your profile page and scroll down to find the “Cancel Subscription” button. Click it to stop your membership. Be sure to also cancel the recurring payment in your PayPal account.
Why do images have watermarks, and how can I remove them?
Watermarks are added to protect against mass reselling. If you’re working on a piece and the watermark is obscuring important details, just contact us — we’ll send you a version without the watermark.
Is the subscription refundable?
No, subscriptions are non-refundable. Please read our Terms of Use before subscribing. If you’re unsure, start with the weekly plan to try it out first.
Why do some images look like drawings and not real photos?
All of the images are based on real photos. Some have been lightly filtered to enhance contrast, clarity, or mood — making them more appealing and easier to use as drawing or painting references.
Where can I see newly added images?
Newly added photos are posted on the Updates page in chronological order, along with the dates they were added.
I subscribed but can’t access the photos — what should I do?
Make sure you’re logged in. If you’re still having trouble, refresh the page or clear your browser cache. If the problem continues, contact us and we’ll fix it right away.
Can I request specific subjects or themes for future photos?
Yes! We welcome your input. If you have specific requests — like certain breeds, animals, poses, or moods — feel free to let us know. We consider all requests for upcoming reference packs.
Can I submit my own photos?
At this time, we don’t accept user submissions. However, this may change in the future as we grow — stay tuned!
Can I share the images with my friends or art group?
Please don’t send the image files directly. If you’d like to share, just link to our website so others can explore and subscribe themselves. That support helps us keep the site running and growing.
